Sorry to resurrect an old topic in a new thread, but as a veritable coffee-addict, I felt I had to share this article from the Economist with you.

Scientists at the University of Nevada have found a way of turning coffee grounds (which can either be thrown out or composted at the moment) into biodiesel.

Biodiesel is more environmentally friendly than regular diesel as well as cheaper. Unfortunately, support for biodiesel (from Brazil and America in particular) lead to a lot of farmers switching to soya and other biofuel crops which contributed to increases in the price of food over the past couple of years. It also has the unfortunate effect of making your vehicle smell like a fast-food outlet.

Biodiesel from coffee would fix both these problems - it uses waste from coffee (and the left-overs after conversion to biodiesel can be composted) rather than taking up valuable agricultural land, and makes your vehicle smell like a rather attractive cappuccino, which I for one, would not be opposed to. Globally, they estimate about 340m tonnes of biodiesel could be produced from coffee grounds. Just think, by drinking coffee, I could be helping the planet! Plus I probably drink enough to provide fuel for most of my home town!
