Going green will no longer cut it. The only chance our future has to live a life that we take for granted is for all of us to sacrifice our desire for consumption and replace it with a desire to make sure our future can have what we have. Life on Earth.

And if any of you are still prepared to argue that man has nothing to do with the changes of global temperature, which in turn is killing Gaia. I will make you pay in Gold coins.
The time has passed for talk. Infact the time for talk passed 200 years ago when Darwin first warned of the effects of us thinking we are special.
Now is the time to act.
Pain will come to all who act.
Hell will come to those who don't.

Remember. In 50 years time your grandchildren will ask you what you did to save the Gaia.
Now is your time to make sure you can answer then with pride.

I'm not sure if this is a troll topic, however, no matter if warming up of our planet we register is part of some greater cycle or if humans are the only culprit, we cannot deny that for the first time in human history global population is faced with challenges caused by ourselves.

It's not that long ago when drinking water from a stream was common, when cutting a tree for fire wood had no significance to anything, or when killing a buffalo had no effect on the count of the heard.

This is no longer true. This has changed in the last century and we have to deal with it, one way or the other, whether we like it or not.

----
Tragedy of the commons

[snip]

The metaphor illustrates the argument that free access and unrestricted demand for a finite resource ultimately dooms the resource through over-exploitation. This occurs because the benefits of exploitation accrue to individuals or groups, each of whom is motivated to maximize use of the resource to the point in which they become reliant on it, while the costs of the exploitation are borne by all those to whom the resource is available (which may be a wider class of individuals than those who are exploiting it). This, in turn, causes demand for the resource to increase, which causes the problem to snowball to the point that the resource is exhausted. The rate at which exhaustion of the resource is realized depends primarily on three factors: the number of users wanting to consume the commons, the consumptiveness of their uses, and the relative robustness of the commons

If you haven't seen or heard of the movie "The Happening" then it's relevant to this.
It shows that man-kind are hurting nature and near destroying it. The release of a toxin by the surrounding plant life in an evolutionary last-ditch attempt to protect themselves from the predator that endangers them the most- man, Mother natures responds.

The world has got by without ice caps before, it will do so again. Life will also survive. History is littered with mass extinction events.

Survival of the most fit, as always.

Humans are not killing Earth. We're putting our own survival at risk, at best. At worst, we're going to take a few other species with us too.

But that's the way nature works. To suggest that human civilisation is not a part of the natural system is idiocy, and tree-hugging blindness.

Not to mention the fact tht the Earth is curently progressing not only forwards out of an ice age, but also an unusually stable few milennia of weather should also be taken into account.

Acid rain, ozone holes, climate change...

It's that kind of attitude Miles which is putting Life on Earth at risk.
This is not a game of risk that can be re-started and it's not something that can be fix when it's broken.
We have one chance to ensure the survival of life on Earth. And that chance is now.
You are risking my nieces and nephews lives. And I will not tolerate it.
This thread is not here to discuss the issue. It is here for me to find people who disagree that man is killing Giai so I can make them pay in Gold coins for the damage their influence is having on other people.

i would agree that its hard to distinguish if one's interest or sympathy for environmentalism is genuine or if one follows a trend, however, if something becomes global trend, an issue people all around the world can relate to or are concerned with, then to me its indication that theres something, some truth, about it.

on the other hand if something is a trend, then certain people or interest groups will try to use people subscribing to it for their own goals, and personally i get alerted by such efforts.

its not possible to force anyone to anything. at least not in the long term be it in the name of whatever. the only way i see is .. education.

its my belief people have right to be self-destructive, but there is a difference between being conscious about it and being ignorant.

It's survival of the most fit, not survival of the fittest. The strongest isn't always the best adapted. And it applies to the species as a whole, not individuals. So that particular point is moot, Zdeněk Pavlovský. All of the issues you bring up are matters for individual societies to address. As for asthma and allergies, they are a direct result of the overly-hygenic "western" way of life, because our immune systems simply don't learn to deal with these things as we develop.

As for you, Nix. All I can say is that you appear to be a very confused person. At the moment, the earth is in a relatively cold period. It has been much hotter in the past than it is now. Look at the early Triasic period, for example. As I said, the world - and life - have survived through greater extremes than those which we face.

When environmentalists such as yourself say things along the lines of "Save the earth from global warming!" what you really mean to say is "Save humanity from the current 'insert political-point-scoring issue here'!"

Climate change is real, yes. Life is all about change. Naturally occuring.

Oh wow would you look at that little coincidence...

look Miles, as i say personally i could care less if the world would cease to exist tomorrow. personally i do not have ambitions to make anyone to do anything nor to change anyone nor to preach to anyone.

my point, in the context of your post, was that using the argument .. its the survival of the fittest and thats why its fine or just or good is .. moot.

even Dawkins, the most influential evolutionary biologist of our time, whom we could expect to defend the point you were making, admits such approach is not hmmm wise.

Putting it another way, I'm a passionate Darwinian when it comes to science, when it comes to explaining the world, but I'm a passionate anti-Darwinian when it comes to morality and politics - Richard Dawkins

im not going to argue how people understand "survival of the fittest" because we could probably find many mis/interpretations and mis/understandings nor im going to argue if global warming is caused by us or naturally occurring, because that is irrelevant to the point i was making.

the point was, if i chose to disregard everyone else and everything around me, it might happen i will be sorry.

Miles Prower

You're misquoting Darwin in order to prove a point that I never made. And then using that to impose a moral framework upon what I say via the context into which you erroneously place it as a result. Frankly, it is most amusing.

I did not once say that 'survival of the most fit' made anything covered by this discussion right, just or good.

What I did imply - if not outright say - was that life has endured far more drastic changes in the environment and that the current situation is not as dire as some political animals would make it out to be.

Where you're getting the impression that I'm saying to hell with all consequences because the fittest will endure is beyond me.

But it does make for good reading. Keep it up.

Quote:

Miles. Why do you think it's alright for man to kill Gaia and destroy my nieces and nephews environment?

Gaia. You impose a single unity upon the life processes of the world where none exists. Species appear and dissapear all the time. It is the very nature of life. To change and adapt to the environs in which it finds itself, or die out.

Life has survived far more extreme conditions on this world, as I have pointed out several times.

As for killing your relatives, that is extremely far-fetched and unrealistic. The eradication of the entire human race due to global warming is nigh on impossible.

This unusual idea of the earth's environment as a single static entity is a flawed and dangerous view, championed by envoronmentalists who wish to impart social guilt upon their respective societies. In trying to prevent what is essentially a fluid system from evolving and changing as nature intended you end up doing more harm than good, to both human civilisation and the environment at large.

The largest extinction event involved some 80 percent of all classifications of biological life...plants,vertebrates,and insects.

The 20th/21st century is certainly not the first time humans have squandered their resources and then faced starvation disease and cannibalism. Not only did ancients over harvest the big game in Africa they chased the last mammoth down all the way across Eurasia and North America and then over harvested the giant sloths too. Easter Island is the classic example. From the hill you could see the entire Island. The wing nut that chopped the last tree to roll his/her ceremonial stonehead must have known it was the last palm tree.

More recently, 19th century environmentalists did succeed in generating awareness that the sperm whale stock was severely depleted. Rather than inspiring a reduction in sperm-brain-candle use it inspired the invention of coal-gas, kerosene, oil drilling, and eventually light bulbs.

There is no need to worry about solving the carbon footprint. We have advanced to a level of technology where we can dispose of carbon. Now we can cover the earth with silica fume, radioactive waste, and/or megatons of battery acid. If you don't like the silica fumes we can replace doped silicon with a mixture of gallium and arsenic. Or lightweight thin films of exotic mixtures.

With over 10B people on earth there is no reason to worry about starving. Just keep your ammunition dry.

You said 'its not possible to force anyone to anything. at least not in the long term be it in the name of whatever. the only way i see is .. education.'

200 years ago is when the education started and where has it got us? Some will put a plastic bottle in a green bag and maybe even switch a light off. Not enough. For the lesson that was being taught was for man/woman to stop consuming. Not even a credit crunch will stop people from consuming.
And now we have ran out of time.

I will fight those who challenge me. For it is they who try and stop the reality from becoming the truth. For when truth is known the people respond.
There is one truth. We are killing the eco system.

Scholars generally believe that the Socratic paradox is actually Socratic rather than an invention of Plato. The one positive statement that Socrates seems to have made is a definition of virtue (areté): "virtue is knowledge." If one knows the good, one will always do the good. It follows, then, that anyone who does anything wrong doesn't really know what the good is. This, for Socrates, justifies tearing down people's moral positions, for if they have the wrong ideas about virtue, morality, love, or any other ethical idea, they can't be trusted to do the right thing. - http://www.wsu.edu/~dee/GREECE/SOCRATES.HTM

this is what i meant by education.

yes i said i believe humans have the right to be self-destructive, at the same time i believe most of them cannot, are not willing are not able, override their primal programming and want to live, procreate, and prosper.

therefore if humans act in self-destructive way, they are just being ignorant - they do not know the "good".

im not asking you nix not to fight for what you believe in, im not asking someone else not to buy bottled water or drive a gas guzzler, and im not even asking anyone not to blow up themselves on a bus.

im merely stating my opinion, my perception of reality, my understanding of how the world works, and i might mix in some facts, however, everyone has to decide for her/himself what "good" is and how to act.

It is proven that the earth goes through climate changes over periods of thousands, or even hundreds of years. The last ice age did not come to an end because someone turned their heating up. It came to an end because thats the way nature works.

All this global warming stuff is crap - its just propoganda designed to keep us, the populace, under control.

I mean, recycling. A load of governments promote this, but do you know what happens to a significant proportion of recycable waste? It goes to countries such as China and India to be dumped in a landfill.

Why are governments promoting global warming? Easy - to increase taxable income by making us adhere to their new laws, and to ensure that we cannot, in the future, be held to ransom by oil producing nations such as Iran.

First off, your question:
"Do you think man is not killing the environment?"

Do you really care what I think, Nix? Jan told you what she thinks and you disregard her for simply giving what you ask for, an opinion. We know you're not here to ACTUALLY discuss the topic. You're here because you've become an attention whore. You're using this forum to spout your nonsense and bully people around.

Personally, I'm here for the jollies.

The truth is, you don't know anything more than anybody else in these forums when it comes to climatology/global warming, but you try pass yourself as an educated and enlightened individual. Miles. You seem to think that unless it happens theres no problem. And that if it does happen, there is still no problem because thats just life. ????????????? Is man not here to protect and safe guard our futures world?
Maybe you hav'nt become a man yet. If so, when you do, you will understand where I'm coming from.
Anyway. As soon as I logged onto this game I knew I would come across capitalistic anti-environmentalists. So I stayed to see what they were saying.
But over the past 11 months myself and others have put up with people who force their views about the environment (on the environmental threads) by calling people names and telling people that there is nothing wrong and that if you think that there is, there must be something wrong with you.
I've been insulted and have been threatened with war. And for what? For saying that the environment is in trouble.
Now 11 months of arguing has come to an end. It's time for those who wish to insult me and spread their hatred and mis-information to put their GC's where their mouths are (as I am prepaired to do).
I would never declare war on anyone who was taking part in a debate.
Which is why I started this thread.

Mother Nature cannot wait any longer.
The change has to happen now.
You want to argue miles? Go to the environmental thread and leave me to mine.
Unless the reason you are posting IS for me to declare on you?
Listen mate. If all you want is to debate the environment, there are threads for that. I look forward to debating with you about it.

Oh, don't get me wrong, nix. I care for the future. But unlike certain people out there I'm willing to do my own research rather than simply believing what the media and politicians spoon feed me.

You see, there is a wealth of information out there regarding climate change. And I have yet to find any evidence in favour of "global warming" which has not been discredited by compelling evidence to the contrary.

I realise now that your beliefs stem as much from your enjoyment of putting words into the mouths of others and wishing you held dominion over their lives as much as it does from your political ideology. Good luck with that. It's an impressive ego.

I would be more than willing to debate with you on the issue, except that you have displayed nothing but a closed mind. And the whole point of debate is to learn.

Thing is, you choose to misunderstand and misinterpret what I say simply because it serves your needs. And that interpretation, I've noticed, does indeed fluctuate quite significantly.

Just for you, Nix, I will repeat myself.

Yes, climate change is happening. But that's the nature of the world. The climate has never over the course of nearly five billion years remained a static entity. The fact remains that the earth is still in the process of exiting an ice age. The fact remains that global temperature trends closely follow solar output more than greenhouse gas emissions from humanity. The fact remains that nature places far more greenouse gasses into the environment than humanity.

The list does go on, but I'm trying to keep this simple.

But the most damning fact of all is that the biggest threat to humanity is ignorance, and the biggest threat to our way of life is the willingness of some people to surrender their right to make decisions so willingly to the viewpoint that is most convenient for the current governing body.

If your nieces and nephews do face danger in the future, it's because rash, uneducated people are trying to drastically influence a system they do not fully comprehend - in this case, the ultimately self-regulating environment of the earth.

So whilst you go about damning and condemning us, running around like a headless chicken trying to change the way people think simply because it doesn't fit in with your take on the world, I'll carry on raising my family in a more rational manner.

Best of luck, Nix. You're going to need it.

But I really think this is enough.

/me shakes head

the only fair thing to say is that we are not 100% sure what is causing the changes we can observe. to claim humans do not influence anything is ignorant.

anyone, on either side of the argument, claiming otherwise is a fool.

its like with God .. either it exists or it doesn't, but to say .. I do not know or I am not sure, is apparently not an option for many.

don't let them get to you nix.

people who defend their questionably sustainable lifestyles do so probably because they are not able to do any better. they are driven by their needs and cannot control themselves. in such case if they wanna live with themselves, if they wanna look in to the mirror and feel good, they are left with ignorance, denial and self-deception.

Mr Pavlovsky, The majority of posts in this thread are not outright refuting Nix's position.

People do not like the way he attempts to bully and coerce others into seeing his mainly unfounded opinions. Do you agree with a religious zealot forcing his opinion upon you ?

From a scientific point of view we are 100% sure of what is causing the changes we can observe. No one would or has claimed humans do not influence anything, but human influence would seem to be miniscule in the grand scheme of things.

Do let them get to you nix.

You have every right to express your opinion in the forum, you do not have any right to try to force such opinion on others within the game structure.

its not like anyone gonna win the argument about global warming, its not like most here are educated enough on the subject to have a constructive discussion. ive done my "research" i have my opinion and arguments about cattle in India are .. yeah, thats what the climatologists argue when they get together to exchange opinions and come to some consensus.

This argument is ridiculous and a waste of bandwidth.

Nix is a Marxist. Of course he jumps on the enviromental bandwagon.

Climate Science is a fraud perpetrated on a gullible populace. This planet has existed for billions of years and the only thing any of us can be 100 percent sure of is it changes constantly.

Instead of looking at the climate I am looking at the politics. This whole farce is a grand wealth transfer scheme. The UN is involved to hurt the developed world in order to prop up the Third World.

Climate change is the best thing to happen to the Left wing crackpot. Its useful as a club to beat their views into mass acceptance.

If they can brainwash our children with this nonsense then idiocy like the Kyoto Treaty will not meet such harsh resistance in the future.

It also plays into the World Government arena.

Who better to "save the planet" than a single body controlled by Marxists to regulate every person on the planet.

Let me be blunt.

The UN can kiss my shiney, metal ass.

Nix can go and *%$#@ himself with a pointy stick.

This land is mine. The money I make is mine. I will do with both of them as I see fit. Anyone who claims some power over me or my lifestyle I would ask them to come and enforce it. Personally.

I had just harvested the cash out of them aswell.
The reason you said 'Nix on KB=Swag' was because it was'nt defended.

Jason. I hoped that over 9 months of talking to Johana, by now I could have made him see that the environment is not something to be joked around with, let alone dismissed to the point of trying to over turn environmental discussions on the forum with name calling and threats. But to no avail. And like I said. The time has now ran out. 200 years ago Darwin warned us. 50 years ago evidence started to emerge. 20 years ago action plans were called for and still people like Cock and Johana try to make us brush it under the carpet so they will not be forced into changing their habits and desires.
But now were out of time. And when there is no time there is no logic.
So no. You wont find any logic.
The logical thing would to have been to have spent another 6 months building an army on KB, but thats 6 months to long.

humans will get used to anything nix.

so what car accidents kill more than the so called terrorists? humans got used to car accidents and live with the negative side affects of driving cars.

its a mental thing. the same way humans will probably get used to other negative side affects of their lifestyles - obesity, allergies, cancer, or warming up of the globe.

is it wise? i like to think its stupid, but question remains if humans are capable of doing what you seem to be asking from them. my opinion is that humans are far from it. humans are far from acting like self-aware, conscious, rational, reasonable beings who can postpone their needs if its beneficial to them, or to their offspring, in future despite they like to think of themselves they are all that.

humans are hairless monkeys, and/because they behave as such.

will this change in the future? who knows .. but for the time being the rope between the ubermensch and the beast is pulling towards the beast.

how do you slay the beast?

its in us, its our nature. slaying the beast would eventually mean slaying a part of who we are, and im not all that sure it would be a good thing to do.

i don't even think its possible to slay the beast, its only possible to, more or less, control it. if i take it to extreme, not everyone can be a Buddhist monk, but more importantly not everyone want to be a Buddhist monk.

admitting to our nature is great step forward. not towards the ubermensch, but towards finding solutions to the problems the beast made us to face.

wtf does that mean?

well, instead of everyone becoming a monk, we could admit to being hairless monkeys, admit to our limits, and try to work with that knowledge in mind, try to find a consensus which would conform both, our nature and the nature.

education, knowledge, technology.

what do you want me to say man? ;)

people are different. some are monks, some are Homers, and most are somewhere in between. it can even happen that a monk acts as Homer and Homer as a monk. thats life, and trying to change that, seems foolish to me. change, if even possible, has to come from within in the first place i figure.

so what about those who want to be monks? good for them, hopefully it will bring them what they wish for, but i think monks realize that to impose on another is not the way to go.

we live in society where majority determine trends, determine whats good and whatnot, and i assume we would not like to live in society where minorities would determine the fate of others.

so what about those monks again?

well, either they reconcile with society, or segregate themselves from society, or they can try to fight windmills like Don Quijote.

Your ignorance of general scientific consensus is astounding, Nix. I can only hope that your understanding of underlying principles is not as flawed as your interpretations seem to imply.

From the early to mid twentieth century through to the present day major environmental concerns have done a full 180. In the mid 40s there was major concern of an impending ice age and ecological disaster blamed on human activity and the such much as we see today.

In the end, it turned out that it was actually the residual effects of eccentric vulcanism dating back to the late nineteenth century.

The next focus became the OZone layer. The astounding thing about this is that the concerns came into being in-line with more permanent research-oriented habitations in the southern polar regions. Lifestyles were changed accordingly in order to combat the "damage" humanity had caused - having little to no actual effect, it is worth noting - only for more recent studies and examinations to show that fluctuations in the OZone are an entirely natural cycle within the earth's environment at large.

Man-made global warming is a very recent interpretation of what appears to be a much more natural phenomenon.

Research shows that naturally occuring carbon sinks - the ocean being the primary concern here - are giving off far larger quantities greenhouse gasses than human activity. According to the Internationsal Panel on Climate Change, natural sources emit 150 Gigatonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere every year. This is more than 30 times greater than human activity adds. Also, according to the IPCC, humans have emitted a total of just 270 Gigatonnes of CO2 since the beginning of the Industrial Era 150 years ago., in contrast with what works out as 40.5 Terratonnes from the environment over the same period of time.

The reason we're starting to see climate change appears to be more closely related to a specific saturation level in relation to the earth's oceans and its ability to remove CO2 from the atmosphere, with implications somewhat more closely related to solar activity than human activity. In combination with an effect known as global dimming - a result, quite conversely, of less particulate matter in the atmosphere - the recent trends in climate change seem to be far more effectively addressed via three naturally occuring phenomenon than any sole byproduct of human society.

But yes, Nix. I know. The time for talk is over. Heaven forbid we should all actually learn something which could prove important in future analysis of the earth's environment.

What the world needs is more understanding and less rash action. Destroying the economy to "save" the environment is like shooting one's self in the foot - the economy, and technological development thereof, is the only effective way to move away from what the "environmentalists" see as dirty fuel sources in favour of more renewable ones.

There was a rather interesting article about a pan-European HVDC-renewable power grid in a recent edition of New Scientist which made for particuarly interesting reading. I suggest you look that up as your next talking point.

But, alas, no. Let us end freedom to debate because if it isn't what currently appeals to "environmentalists" the world over then it must be wrong.

But keep in mind - the mechanisms you would deny us are the very tools by which we could save ourselves from what you see as the most immediate threat to humanity.

I do so love your idealised little world, Nix. Is there room in there for one more?

the general scientific consensus is following:

An increasing body of observations gives a collective picture of a warming world and other changes in the climate system... There is new and stronger evidence that most of the warming observed over the last 50 years is attributable to human activities. - Scientific opinion on climate change, wiki

and no, don't not bother to point out that wiki is not source for writing PhD papers.

Miles. The Eco system is very delicately balanced. A tiny change can have devistating effects to microbes and plant life. Which inturn will effect everything else on Earth. Have you ever heard the phrase: The straw that broke the camels back?
All well and good if Nature tipped the balance through volcanic activity, but for us to did it is just plain stupid.
As for the 20's and 40's.
A warning can never be made up of fact, for we never know whats going to truley happen. And a prediction can never be spot on...I predicted to my bro 7 years ago that there was going to be a housing and economic crash. I told him that it would happen in the next couple of years and that maybe he should sell his house. I was wrong. It took 6 years to happen. 4 years out. But in the grand scheme of things 4 years is'nt that long. At the time I felt like a bit of a tit, but due to my warning he did'nt borrow against it and he lived with in his means. So now it's not really effected him. Same goes with the environment predictions. 80 years ago might seem like a long time to you, but again in the history of Mother Nature, 80 years is no time at all.

It's also not just about CO2. It's about chopping down the rain forests, killing all the animals, polluting our seas, destroying the soil and the overall destruction of the Natural world. Anything man has done over the last 50 years wont be shown in studies for atleast another 50 years. It takes time for our effects to be shown. How much more pollution has man created over the past 50 years compaired to the millenium before do you think?

As for the economy. Man does not have to be payed to come up with solutions. We don't need to swap money with aliens for the new technologys and materials. The ways and means are already here. The economy has nothing to do with it. It's due to the economy that all the solutions have been bought and shelved by the big companies.

We need to shoot ourselves in the foot to stop us from walking down the path of self destruction. For desire seems to control alot of people.

Have you read the environmental thread? Most of this is on there.

It's all about not taking the risk.
Would you put your kid on a bike for the first time without a helmet?
They might not fall off. And if they did, they might not even bang their head. But would you risk it?

I might not be explaining it the best way I can due to having no sleep for the past 3 days :)

Thank you, Petra. Very much appreciated.

Nix, for a moment there I was almost convinced that you understood the point I was trying to make, either consciously or without realising it.

Bravo on expanding your horizons just a little bit.

But again, your narrow knowledge base seems to be letting you down in regards to the extrapolations you make, simply because you appear to be limiting yourself to one side of the argument.

Quote:

How much more pollution has man created over the past 50 years compaired to the millenium before do you think?

I refer you to the global dimming scenario.

What you take as the "destruction" of the natural world is simply yet another step in the fluid nature of the environment.

The idea that the environment is a static entity appears to be a mainstay in the argument most "environmentalists" put forwards. It is a very dangerous one in theory, and downright disastrous in practice. Nature is change. Life is change. Preventing life from adapting and evolving to fit the ever-changing environment would result in far greater catastrophe than anything we see in the present.

Quote:

It's also not just about CO2. It's about chopping down the rain forests, killing all the animals, polluting our seas, destroying the soil and the overall destruction of the Natural world.

You put it all down to human activity, but as has been mentioned before there are numerous factors which have influenced many of the points you bring up - some natural. I would be more than happy to open that can of worms should you so wish. I believe you will find it very enlightening.

Quote:

You're missing the point here, mostly because you appear to be looking at the issue from the wrong side.

I'm not saying that people have to be paid to solve issues. What I am saying is that the single biggest innovator is the private sector. Without private investment important research into the green technologies that I assume you wish to see progressed to replace the more polluting ones would simply not exist.

A prime example being the likes of British Petrolleum or Royal Dutch Shell, two big private oil companies which have invested far more in green technologies than most governments.

Or the car company, Toyota, which have pioneered some of the first commercially viable hybrid and hydrogen cell vehicles.

The point I was making is simply that these companies - the ones which can be most readily assosciated with "dirty" industry are the ones who will pave the way to your green paradise.

Shoot them in the foot, if you will. But I would rather let them get on with their jobs and free us from this reliance upon a finite resource.

Quote:

Would you put your kid on a bike for the first time without a helmet?
They might not fall off. And if they did, they might not even bang their head. But would you risk it?

The point here is that if they fell off, the resultant head injury would be a more or less forgone conclusion, so yes, I would.

Applying this logic to the environmental issues you raise suggests to me that you would remove the proverbial helmet by stemming the single largest source of technological innovation, and thus remove the only means by which we could escape your doomsday scenario.

Quote:

Do you know what will happen if the gulfstream fails due to the melting of the ice caps?

May I suggest that you do a little research into paelioclimatology so that you actually understand what would happen if there were no gulf stream?

May I also suggest that you look into the major known factors in keeping the world wide ocean currents flowing, and the gulf stream's place within said system?

Also, turn off your DVD player. The Day After Tomorrow was terribly erroneous in several ways.

But rounding things off, I'll return to the core point of my argument: The single largest threat to life - human or otherwise - remains the natural environment of the earth itself. The processes are there to see, if you will only let go of the social guilt long enough to open your eyes.

You may declare war on me now, Nix. Because I most certainly do not agree with you.

Nix you are a fool.

Thankyou Sam, Jason and Laguna (and others who supported me). These players introduced
me to a new element of the game, and a right good time was had by all. And the mission was
successful.

Criticising my war abilities is futile as I don't pretend to have any, (unlike yourself), I am just
learning and enjoying the game.

Perhaps if you conducted yourself better nix you would get the time of day from other players
too.

These highly experienced war players took the time to show a complete war greenhorn the
workings of the war engine and probably cost themselves in doing so.
You see, if you talked to people right you could partake in this community constructively too.
People may consider your philosophies, you could make allies to further your cause rather
than alienate people so that they don't even listen to you.

So think about the way you handle yourself, if not for your own benefit, then at least for your
causes - Mother Nature.

Supported you for what?
I had already said on this thread that I would not declare on you.
How can your mission be a success?
I'm still fighting.
Gutted. For hours last night I attacked Jasons air craft carrier with a new Warroir C3. 20000 Navy missile batts.
I had got it down 5000, I attack drone for every 5 batts. Then it changed to 1 AD for 4 NMB, then 3 NMB. If it had'nt of changed Jason would have lost the carrier and weapons.

You still have a lot to learn. So do I. For I have only fought one war and that was against Booboo. And then I only used the air force and ground units (did'nt get the chance to use my CM batts and LRCM batts, your were lucky Booboo)
The war has just started mate.
Can you not see whats going on?
Where do you think Mother Natures Army is marching 2?

You lot don't care about Mother Nature. Thats why I'm fighting you.

Ha. I came straight to the forum when I logged on. With the way you are talking I thought you had taken the Warrior C3 you have been attacking. LOL. It's still there :)

Nix you have nothing worth taking. Secured mode will just let you continue to build a debt ridden C3 empire like others I have fought recently. So the question becomes what smacking you around you would gain me.

You like other assorted asshats are beaten and then spin it into a great victory. Whats the point? You have nothing I can take to turn into profit. You will spin off endless C3s for me to take. I fought someone much like you for six real months. Nothing gained. Except now I call him douchebag asshat fuckface instead of shaking hands and going our seperate ways after a great battle. The point of the game is fun not eternal revenge for losing.

Sam, this is his game. He'll get a ton of C3s and max the debt and hide behind it. Then when people decide it's not worth it, he'll boast on the forums that you are a pussy, blah blah blah.

Really, there is no reason to reply to him. Anybody that has followed this knows what a sham he is. He lost the war but will claim the win because he didn't have anything else worth taking. He'll talk more and more shit because that's all he's made of.

No need to spend GC, Stuart, that's all he wants you to do. Doesn't cost him a thing to do all of this. He'll get the debt and then eventually quit. Then we'll be rid of him.

As I said, ask Jason why he said 'Nix on KB = Swag'
Now stop doing a Booboo and get on with it.

Your KB empire has 50.639T in debt in just the few countries I checked.

Your FB empire debt is much higher.

If you made 90B a month in your main before your asshattery....At that rate of repayment, barring any further purchases of any kind, it would only take you 5632 game months or 3.875 real years to repay this debt....Not including interest.

Nix eliminated by Capitalism. How ironic.

After an 11 day march north, through three continents, Mother Natures Army 1st Division has reached the border to the homeland of Craftycockney AKA Lt cock of The Coalition of Capitalist Tree Haters.

The 2nd Divison is on stand by to respond any threats to the home land.

After a short rest The Forces of Nature will be unleashed on the people of Albert Square for their support in a leader who:

1) Believes that no harm is being brought to the environment through the activities of man.

2) Is unwilling to change his behavour to ensure the protection of our futures environment.

3) Has attacked Mother Natures SOS, MN Land and MN air.

No longer will Mother Nature allow this blatent dis-respect to continue.
Craftycockney AKA Lt cock, has proven to be her enemy and therefore will suffer for it.

I should have added at the beginning of this thread that I have been battling with anti-environmentalists on the forum for about the past 9 months. If you hav'nt been following the environmental threads then I wish to just say that my statement was'nt one that just came out of no where. It was bait for Johana and his like to bite.
9 months is a long time for me and others to be banging our heads on a brick wall, while at the same time being insulted and threatened.
So I decided that now is the time for me to knock it down.

I know BC. My patience ran out :(
I also know that I should have phrased my war cry alot better. Maybe?????????

For it did get me what I wanted. A war with Anti-environmentalists.
If I had just started declaring on smart mouthed dood's on the environmental threads, I'd spend all my time chasing shadows. This way I'm only fighting those who want it.

Johana. If anyone has forced anyone to do anything I would say you have forced me to respond to you opening the flood gates of insults and name calling all those months ago. You even offered me out to war because you did'nt like my point of view.
It was you Johana that started the band wagon where people think it is now acceptable to belittle people with cheap shots.
Not acceptable.

Once I think that I've made you understand that I'm not messing about and some respect has been regained on the environmental threads, I'll leave you to your game and I'll play mine.
What will make me determine that you understand, I don't yet know. Until then. Mother Natures Sim Army will continue it's fight for the respect thats due to Mother Nature and our future generations.

Its all about free speech.

I don't respect your inane Marxist ramblings.

I do respect and defend your right to post such dribble.

However others have just as much right to disagree with you.

Its ludicrous to think you can effect change over a games forums. I can't speak for everyone...But as for me I really don't give a shit about your politics. I am here to play a game and have some fun. Period. If I wanted to read long boring posts about the environment and capitalism I would visit hippie sites.

If you wish to post such melodramtic horseshit...Feel free. However in doing so you accept and embrace the rights of others to disagree as they see fit. Up to and including calling you a treehugging ass-pirate with delusions of eco-godhood.

If you don't like it...Stick to game posts.

Feel free to read what I have to write. But do not try and stifle me from writing it.
You see, as the president of my countries I have a right to represent the thoughts and concerns of my people through the world forum.

And as the President of my countries I am also free to put down an ultimatum to who ever I wish..........Quote from another President: 'You are either with us or against us'

So as the President of my countries I will continue to lead my people into a just and honourable war against The Coalition of Capitalist Tree Haters. So as to ensure the health, quality of life and well being for the future generations of my peoples.

Maybe now. But then, You lost all interceptors in the air 400x35 and you only seemed to have enough to put up another 8 wings as thats all you put up.
Maybe 800 helis. Next wave would have removed them well easy. With loads of ammo and weapons to make a start on your ground units and garrisons.
All SF units destroyed. Around 50 and I don't know how many L tanks ect.
Not to mention the offensive weapons you lost attacking me.
I lost 8K attack drones maybe.
Around 250 P bombers Max.
0 fighters.
Do the sums :)

If you had'nt have gone into WP this would have all been sorted out by now. The proof would had been in the eating. Instead you pussied out and now your trying to save face. Lame.

I do not care about your politics. I do care for the environment and have done far more than you could afford or understand to protect it for my children. But that is reality not a game. I try not to mix the two.

Having said that.

Speak as you like and debate whoever will answer you.

I don't argue with you any longer. I allow others the joy of discovering your bizarre logic.

Do not threaten others over disagreeing politically with you.

Do not be an asshat towards others over real life issues and opinions. This is a game. Not an environmental forum.

/me grabs trout and rams it down Popes throat.
So it was OK for you to insult and threaten me those months back?
And it was OK for Booboo to insult and then attack me?
But when I do it it's not OK?
BS.
And now after 7 months of insults, put downs and arguments you come out with 'I do care for the environment'
It's people like you that make me insane.

I will do what I have to do to make sure I challenge the people who dont care about the environment. Whether it be in the cities, in the pubs, in Jerusalem, in the streets or in a game. Any opportunity I will take it. And a game full of capitalists was an opportunity too good to not take. Don't you think?

Now I'm pissed off. Cockney also said today that he cares about the environment and what man is doing to it. 9 F&$%£NG months spent playing this game in the hope that I would fight a Capitalistic anti-environmentalist and I end up fighting a couple of jokers.

Like I told you before, nix, I highly doubt ANYBODY here is "ANTI-environment". Most either disagree with your views on global warming, or whatever else you've been talking about, but that doesn't mean that they are the ones trashing the environment.

The people you are trying to find are not playing these types of games. They are careless company executives that pollute to make more money, they are 3rd world countries and citizens, and they are bad or corrupt politicians. I doubt you'll find those people here.

I'm sure, for the most part, the players here, regardless of their ideology, enjoy the earth, want to "protect the environment", and want to leave their kids with the same planet they had growing up. To that end, I doubt anybody would argue with you.

The ones arguing with you are probably just doing it to spite you. Like I said before, you are bringing the "anti-environmentalist" out of people. Your antics have distorted whatever message you were trying to send.

As far as mocking, it's just something you have to deal with online. Bobo has mocked my posts before (the NA vs EU war). Though I have yet to be mocked by Sam or Jason, I look forward to the day when we can all mock each other and sit around tree stumps singing Kumbaya like a bunch of hippehs.

Hi BC. The message I was trying to get over is one of desperation. For we no longer have the time to debate the issue of whether or not man is killing the Natural world. You see, if we all do not act now it will be to late. And if you do not agree, then you will not act. This is too important to just say we'll have to agree to disagree.
As for those who mock, they are worst than those who dont care.
Over the past 7 months it had become clear that words were not going to be enough, mainly due to those who mocked for mockings sake. If I was going to make my point clear, I needed to use actions(hence my antics), even if that meant sacrificing my reputation and empires.
This is the first time I have used a forum to express the urgency of action and to seek out my enemies. From this experience I have learned that it's a waste of time. If I cannot see the whites of my enemies eyes, I have no idea if they are for real.
And as for Booboo, well he's just a prick.

Booboo. I dont know where your from. But where I'm from, if you were to call someone you don't know an idiot without explaining why, you would get a fist in your face. Maybe thats why you spend so much time playing this game.

To beautify your map you can choose the percentage of Roads and Train Tracks that should be painted on your country map. You can exaggerate up to 300% to beautify the map until you have time (and money) to build infrastructure.

Dear friends,

The Brazilian Congress has just passed a catastrophic forestry bill that gives loggers and farmers free rein to cut down huge swaths of the Amazon. Now only President Dilma can stop it.

Fortunately, the timing is on our side -- in weeks Dilma will host the world’s biggest environmental summit and insiders say she cannot afford to open it as the leader who approved the destruction of the rainforest. She’s facing mounting domestic pressure -- 79% of Brazilians rejecting this new bill Now, let's turn up the global heat and push her to axe the bill, not the rainforest.

Dilma will make her decision in the next 48 hours! Let's get her to veto the bill. Click below to sign the urgent petition to stop the Amazon chainsaw massacre and if you have already signed -- send this to everyone:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/veto_dilma_global_final_push/?tta

The Amazon is vital to life on earth -- 20% of our oxygen comes from this magnificent rainforest, and it plays a key role in mitigating global climate change. Over the last decade, Brazil has vastly reduced deforestation rates, achieving a 78% decline between 2004 and 2011. The reason? A world-acclaimed forestry law, strong enforcement and satellite monitoring.

But this dangerous new bill would open up an area the size of France and Britain combined to clear-cutting and gives loggers amnesty for all past deforestation crimes. This would not only spark total forest devastation in Brazil, it would also set a bad precedent for other countries. That’s why it’s so crucial that we all protect it.

Brazil is a rapidly developing country, battling to lift tens of millions out of poverty. Despite evidence that growth does not require deforestation, Dilma is under pressure from the powerful agricultural lobby that helped her get elected to cut down rainforest for profit. And it is an ugly battle -- activists are being murdered, intimidated and silenced. But ex-Environmental Ministers and people across Brazil have sent a clear message to Dilma that they want to save the Amazon. Now, it’s up to all of us to stand with them and urge President Dilma to remain strong.

The fate of Brazil’s rainforests is dangling by a thread. But, with President Dilma so vulnerable to public pressure right now, we can bring the global force of people power to get a win for our planet! Sign the urgent petition below and tell everyone -- the petition will be delivered by Brazil’s former Environment Ministers directly to Dilma:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/veto_dilma_global_final_push/?tta

In the last three years, we have won battle after battle against the odds. Now, let’s come together to stop the destruction of the Amazon, protect our planet and herald Dilma as a true international environmental leader.

Paste it into google and read the bit on 'smart people'.

Here, if you can't bring it up, is part of the article:
'Smart people'
He said the Singapore project would be like an interactive computer experience in which people could make decisions about the island's ecology and habitat.

He compared it to the popular Sim Country computer game.

"We want to create a living Sim Country for them and their scientific community."

@ gunther: ditto on commies, lol. Nix, not all capitalists want to turn the earth into a CO2-saturated desert full of radioactive toxic waste dumps. :) As for Brasil, having lived there several years, you might be surprised to know that the current head of state is a radical socialist, who was a card-carrying communist activist in the past. Unless things have changed, and I don't know whether they have or not, Brasil's politicians are prone to flamboyant, outrageous propositions which they have no intention of implementing, to gain attention. They will never clear-cut the rain forest; in future, they may use it as a bargaining chip on the world economic stage, and this the wind-up.
Personally, I am what would probably be labeled as a right-wing capitalist extremist gun-totin', cope-chewin', heterosexual, red-blooded , freedom-loving American man. Come to think of it, that's exactly what I am, and --I-- am against clearcutting the rain forest. So there :)

Fear mongers, a group of people who use pseudo-science to strike fear into the masses to make massive profits.
In the 60s and 70s it was the threat of worldwide nuclear war, in the 80s we were on the verge of an Ice Age, then Global Warming and now Climatic Change.
Look at the people who feed the fear, Al Gore for instance, before his Global Warming film he was worth about 1.7 Mil, now 200 Mil...
The average temperature of the earth has been estimated to have increase somewhere between .7 and 1.7 degrees in the last 100 years. We are in the Tropical Period of the Ice Age cycle, temperatures are supposed to go up. Also note that the average temperature of Mars has gone up about the same, are we to blame for that as well?

Yeah Dboyd what you forgot to mention about your fact there that is most of that increase has happened since 1979 (.72 deg increase) now that may not sound like a lot but it is the difference between freezing and melting. Much of the permafrost up north is trapping methane, and when it thaws releases the gas. To say that everything dies like Cam does is a waste of time because it is logically moronic to make your current habits and POV on such a philosophy. Similarly the argument that this is some liberal plot is avoiding the issue, similar logic in the idea that Al Gore is only in it for the money. The issue is greater than your view on Gore and liberals as more massive storms pick up more water and drown out our food supply and ruin our infrastructure. I hope Brazil doesn't cut down the rain forest for timber. While it is easy for us to say it is looney to worry about something so far away or something that has an unclear or indirect correlation, we need to do what we can now to preserve our world for our children. I suggest you educate yourselves to this topic and stop being dismissive. You can change a little and effect a lot such as using public transport more, using less energy, and choosing to buy sustainable products not made from brazilian wood. Becoming an informed consumer is the first step.

Human existance is such a brief speck in time and space that we might as well be a singularity. Hence to consider that we can have any influence on the picosecond of time we occupy is completely irrational.

This leads me to believe that, in the human time frame, the urge to live benevolently must be down to some deep rooted guilt for any of our actions. Well, guilt is not nature, it's nurture, so the question to ask is: who or what is instilling this guilt?

Re: the death of Earth due to expansion of the sun: Keep in mind that once the sun expands, it will eventually turn Mars into a cinder as well. For that matter, the only way to escape is to get to another star system altogether. But wait! EVENTUALLY that star will also either go nova or go Red Giant, thus the scenario repeats itself. The only solution seems to be to keep on the run from star to star, staying one jump ahead of catastrophe. But wait! The universe will EVENTUALLY end when entropy finally completes its rundown cycle, so all life is totally doomed anyway, eventually. Say a few hundred billion years, give or take...

There is probably some truth to those statistics. But look at what these so-called 'Green' people/organizations want to push. They want to do more than act in what their view is responsible for the environment, they have an agenda that allows them to profit off of what they try to claim as a noble act. One good example of this is Al Gore, one of the most dishonest of all politicians. So even though its true that taking care of the environment is a good thing, the great majority of those that push this agenda are scum that is attempting to profit from fear.

I think you fatalist out there are missing the main point. If we don't do something now, then when? And if not us then who? We have the ways and means to plant trees, buy sustainable products, use less gas, eat less meat, recycle. It doesn't harm us, pinch our freedoms, nothing. It's about being conscious that if we don't, bad things will happen. Those selling the cool aid don't want you to consume less because the will sell less. What happens down the line in 10-15 years when cycles of drought and floods wipes out our food supply? What about massive storms that take out our coastal homes and neighbors? Will our freedoms be impinged then? How about when it is too expensive to buy home insurance and the govt doesn't help? I'm not saying change drastically now because it is popular or religious. I'm saying the way things are going looks grim and it will only get worse.

For example, if we will eventually run out of fossil fuels then the dwindling supply and increasing energy demands of a growing and developing world should make it so that other energy sources become more cost effective than fossil fuels... in effect, this is an example of something that will solve itself. Once solar/wind/whatever is cheaper to produce than coal/oil/whatever, then at that point, it will be entirely rational to go green.

Another issue is that it seems like it would be more beneficial for everyone if instead of pushing for people to (in)voluntarily decrease their consumption or alter their lifestyles radically, wouldn't it make more sense to assume that people live like they do? Meaning that rather than solutions that tell people to do things they wouldn't normally do, why don't we find solutions that take people's normal behavior for granted?

Alternatively, who wants to be the one to tell the Chinese they can't use coal?

Ok, here is the next liberal solution (I have heard this one several times, and they said it with a straight face): Cut the world population to around 100 million or so. That's over a 99% reduction, people, and even less viable than some other "radical" solutions. And don't get me started on the fallacy of the Malthusian doctrine.
BTW, I agree that once fossil fuels start running dry, people WILL suddenly be clamoring for nuclear power, ethanol, biodiesel, etc., whatever energy forms are being shunned by greenies right now. And keep this in mind: the military will have to stockpile years of fossil fuel if it comes to a crisis in supply, We might as well start making more progress in nuclear power right now.

You all make really good points as to possible solutions, however most of them require significant efforts by either the government (in the pocket of big oil) or other entities where it is not in their best interest to change. Recently an article was posted by the Electricity Association noting that their market was decreasing in power generation and they needed to address the possibility that solar posed to their business model. A good example of how the market will drive business to make changes. But most of the other "solutions" are not viable. Eliminating 5.9 billion people from the world is not going to work. Ethanol, biodiesel, gas, oil, oil sand, and coal are all fuels that have the same issue as what we are doing now albeit that at least ethanol and biodiesel remove some carbon when growing. I know a lot of people like the idea of nuclear power, but where is the waste going to be stored? How about in your town? The problems with all the solutions are that someone else has to make the change, continuing the idea that we, me and you, don't have to change. My point is that if we make small changes now (the first is being conscious of our own consumption and waste) then we can be part of the solution. We can move the market with logical and pointed buying decisions. But it requires you all to understand why you are doing what you are doing. Nix started this thread 4 years ago to raise awareness. This is all part of the same point. Being aware is needed. Making excuses and asking others to change while you do not isn't going to work.

Scarlet. It is down to the stronger winds in the Antarctic (due to climate change) pushing the ice out to sea. The Arctic is mainly influenced by the sea temperature, which is why its melting. Ok now there is 400ppm CO2 in the atmosphere. Last time those levels were on Earth was 3 million years ago. The level required for life as we know it is 350ppm. Does it look like we have time to wait for fossil fuels to run out? Antonio bro.....I feared this would happen....from 'theres no problem' to 'its too late to do something about it' Sounds like all excuses to me. Keep the hope alive mate. The way i see it is this energy crisis is going to at worst cause anarchy and millions if not billions of death and destruction and at best going to make the average person unable to thrive in what we call the middle class..it will cause rampant unemployment greater stratefication of society basically a dark age.... we can ethier continue on our path and fight tooth and nail to be at the top (capitalism) in order to "enjoy" life or sit around and hope technology saves us or we can take steps to make sure there is enough for everyone and the world through various forms of population control...... Tmac it is not generally natural for people to not consume as much as they can.... our current society is very idealist.. meaning it will only be sustainable if people were more or less perfect if people all did the right things consume responsibly, go to school, dont do drugs... if we were all perfect we may succeed in conquering nature once and for all or nature will defeat us ethier way it sucks i dont want to live in a world 100% dedicated to keeping humans alive nor do i want to see human civillization collapse

why is biodiesel murder its just using plants as a factory for converting sunlight into chemical energy... same as if we used solar panels or nuke plants to make electricity to fuel my (shudder) prius .... see this is what I mean by standard of living ... I don't want to drive a prius

Scarlet

Sunday, June 2, 2013 - 08:06 am Click here to edit this post
Don't get a prius to save the environment. The production process for all that hybrid equipment uses plenty of coal-based electricity... and the gas savings aren't great. Not to mention that battery production probably pollutes more any other vehicle component around (though that's probably mostly because the lithium comes from China). And the 5 year running cost + initial cost for you as a consumer is probably more expensive than any standard compact. You're paying more, polluting more, and driving an inferior vehicle. Getting any non-hybrid compact sedan or wagon is probably better... in every single way. If you want to pat yourself on the back and feel like you're making a difference, get a prius... it's not true and you'll look like an idiot, but you'll feel good about yourself.

And if you think plug-in eletrics are better, remember that most of that electricity is probably coming from coal-fired plants.

Also, you don't want to promote any "alternative" fuel that requires vast amounts of cropland.

Do some research.

Hi Scarlet. Do you desireless for material wealth and consumeless now you know how much damage desiring material wealth and consuming is doing to our future and environment? Hey Roving eye. I've seen ya. Anyways if we desireless, energy consumption will be reduced to levels that our scientists could work with. Remember.....most pollution is created through your desires to have what you want. If we lived for what we needed our future will have what they need to live. Profit creates a need to have more than you need. Profit takes away from those in need. Desire and profit are the Devils work. How many of you here can say you are not helping the Devil destroy Gods creation?

I think if I were a god, I would like to be the god of desire.

If we desire nothing of life, why should we bother living? There's no innate value to life without things to give it value. And things only have value because we desire them.

If we're talking about sacrifice, why is it we who should sacrifice for the future and not the future that should sacrifice for us? There is no fundamental difference between taking one of these positions over the other... aside from the fact that we've got the jump on the future in terms of being able to force the issue.

On the other hand, the only reasonable solution is one that does not require sacrifice. If you sincerely believe no such solution exists, then by all means, we are better off taking as much as we can while we still can... because there's no fundamental difference other than who is making the sacrifice.

If you can't come up with a solution that doesn't require sacrifice, you're not solving the problem. Because the problem is how we can best fulfill all of our individual desires.

T Mac

Scarlet- I think you have taken desire and owning and combined them. I can desire lots of things in this world, but it doesn't mean I will have them, not does it mean that I will be happier if I have them. Thoreau stated that we down own things, things own us. We end up working to support the things we desire. Similarly the buddists believe that desire equals suffering, because we want, we suffer. Your point regarding sacrifice is totalitarian. Right now we are taking from the future, just like our parents have taken from us with extreme wasteful consumption, ie no recycling, inefficient motors, etc. In the world there is a concept that we need to be conscious of how our actions affect 7 generations from now. Living simple so that others may simply live. The idea shares a line with "we belong to the earth, the earth does not belong to us.". Your desires that you speak about reflect consumer based happiness which is predicated on getting and consuming new things. It is also predicated on the idea of instant gratification. We can also fing gratification in self sufficiency, in living by a standard of resect for others, even those not here yet. We can find that relying on ourselves is a desire, and receive gratification and purpose through providing for ourselves much like we do when we work for the man"

T Mac, I'm assuming that if you desire something, this is implies that you're going to do what it takes to get it. Anyway, you haven't disproven my statement. How is the future sacrificing for our sake any different from us sacrificing for the future's sake? My point is simply a rational one. If someone is to be the sacrificial lamb, it's entirely rational to make sure it isn't you. If we've decided that someone sacrificing is the only way, all that's left is fighting.

You seem to be misunderstanding me anyway. Sacrifice is the most retarded way of handling the situation. Live simple so that others can live simple... what could possibly be wrong with this? For starters, what if neither us nor the future wants to live simply. I shouldn't live in a manner I dislike so that some future can generation can repeat the cycle unhappily over and over. There's no reason for it. If you want to live simply, cool, whatever... that doesn't mean everyone wants to.

Look, there are plenty of things that people desire that aren't material things, but there are plenty of things that are. There is no fundamental difference between whether you want a material or immaterial thing. Arguing that you should just ignore your desires is stupid. The only reason to ignore a desire is that it is overall detrimental to the totality of your desires.

The earth doesn't think, the earth doesn't breath, the earth doesn't feel. The earth is only important to the extent that it provides for human needs and human desires.

There's a word for the phrases you're saying... they're called bromides. They mean nothing.

To reiterate my point, you need to come up with a solution that doesn't require sacrifice. Otherwise, you solve nothing. You just avoid the problem. It's like if my TV were broken and you told me not to watch TV anymore... the problem is I want to watch TV and the TV is broken, telling me not to watch TV completely misses the point.

Antonio population growth is exponential this means if we can fit 5 billion people on a planet and we have 1 planet then in 30 years we will need 2 planets (population doubles every 30 years) then in another 30 years we will need 4 planets... then in 30 years we will need another galaxy... then in 30 years we will need 4 galaxies then 8 then 16 then 32.... all in the same time frame.... this assumes of course that what your saying is actually possible which at the current rate of technological advance it is not.... the difference between us sacrificing for the future and the future sacrificing for us is that one is inherently selfish and asinine and only a nihilist would disagree... and theres plenty of "simple" ways to live that arent terrible lifestyles so your argument is pretty irrelevant you just have to experience them or create them.. obviously theres no one right way to live but everyone can find there own way to live in harmony with nature and the earth our genetics and thousands of years of evolution have proved this we were meant to live with the earth not against it as conquerers as you seem to imply.... to reiterate there are solutions that dont require sacrifice its just a matter of perspective

it is legitament (Ik I spelled that wrong) site my science teacher showed me. It will take millions to begin colonizing a planet and even more to finish. As the ability to go to another planet opens up the population on Earth will dwindle and that of others will rise (when they are colonize-able) 30 years is a long time, and if our population doubles every thirty years then why are we stagnant in the 7 billions right now?

In 1900, the world's population was 1.65 billion
In 2008, the world population is 6.64 billion.
that's a 4.01 billion rise in 108 years

I do not see your point regarding the 4 billion increase in 104 years ...google an image of a graph of earths population ... maybe look up the definition of exponential ... population growth is not stagnant... it takes millions of what to begin colonizing a planet?... again the idea that we can keep expanding into the universe offsetting population growth is wrong its physically and mathematically impossible... and sure lets colonize a whole galaxy to sustain 30 more years of population growth... that doesn't sound bogus to you??

AH yea with out gorilla's we would, and without us Gorillas would. we won't colonize the entire galaxy that is impossible due to not being able to go on gas giants. There are videos on the world preparing for the colonization effort.

And millions of people. it will take millions of people.

and the 4 billion increase in 104 year thing was because you said that the world population doubles every 30 years.
30 fits into 100 3 times.
1.65 x 2 = 3.3
3.3 x 2 = 6.6
6.6 x 2 = 13.2

if what you say about the world population doubling every thirty years is true then by 1990 the world population would have been 13.2 billion, and by 2020 the world population would be 26.4 billion. Current world population is 7089463000 and rising. 7089463000 x 2 = 14178926000, so with what you say in 30 years our population will be 14 billion. What you say about our population does not add up mathematically as the population has only risen just over 6 billion in 100 years.

the last doubling of population from 3 to 6 billion took 35 years... that is my basis.... population up until recently (35 years) has been relatively stable but since agricultural advancements like the green revolution it has been shown that population growth doubles every 35 years and the rates keep going up..... i could say ohh population is stable look from 2 million BC to 7000 BC population remained about the same but that would just be inane no?..... and i still dont see the point your trying to make... the costs to send a single robot to mars is prohibitive let alone sending millions of people... the energy requirements would be fantastic maybe you should do some research and let us know how much.... they cancelled the shuttle program for a reason

Hi Anthonyzappulla. This is the problem. There are many things humans are doing that will destroy Mother Nature. Destruction of bio-diversity. Destruction of soil (Soil traps more CO2 than trees). Pollution of sea, land and air. And the contribution of CO2 to the planet which is creating Global warming in some areas and Global cooling in others. I agree about the suns cycles of grand minimums and grand maximums having a direct influence of Earth. Infact we seem to be going into a grand minimum??? Which should be cooling our Earth down??? But with our CO2 release and chem spraying in the atmosphere, we seem to be warming the planet.
What caused the ice age seems to be an asteroid hit? Also volcanoes activity can also cause global cooling.
Mother Nature is dying and the web of life collapsing due to human activity across the board. Not just our CO2 release friend.

not to mention the melting permafrost that will release more greenhouse gases and make this spiral out of control. Thermohaline ocean circulation will be disrupted by melting greenlandic ice which will cause Europe to have winters many times harsher than they experience right now, and in turn screw up weather patterns worldwide. I don't think people under stand the unimaginable interconnection there is with weather. global heating or cooling affects literally every part of life. mark my words the world will be thinking in 30+ years, "why didn't we do anything???". even if tomorrow we magically stopped all emissions from every single source around the world (which will never happen), the temps will continue to rise for the next few hundred years, which means all our coastlines will be dramatically shifted. I think the human race will survive but at a huge cost. the world will never be the same let me tell you. we are living in the last days of what we consider normal. we will call this era we are living in "before change" or something of the sort in the future. it bothers me when people think that we aren't affecting anything. then again we have what's coming for us.

But if we all revert back to being peasant farmers, 3/4 of the worlds population does not have to be eliminated. I do not see our masters sacrificing their standard of living....So.....I guess they will purge the world of us gentiles.

Until today. Today my new crusade will be to bring awarness to people that making the sacrifices needed to ensure our future generations have a functioning planet to live on, does not mean reducing their ability to live or to feel alive.
Infact, in my experience, sacrificing for a worthy cause makes me feel 100 times more worthy of life than just living life for what I want.
During my crusade I had to become become what I preached. To be #Desireless.
So...As a single man...Over 15 years I have positioned myself to become a peasant farmer (As requested by the #UN).
I'm able to grow my own food. I've accepted buying secondhand when I need something. I do not have holidays abroad. I do not need/have a car. I've reduced my income and expenditure to £30 a day (including rent and bills). I only use 20p-40p electric/gas a day and I recycle and re-use any waste I can.
For sure I still need to totally give up meat and focus more on using the shops that re-fill my containers so to cut down on packaging. ~One shakes ones head in disbelief at how hard I'm finding it to give up meat~.
Now the World is out of denial....#Humanity has no excuse not to act.

Hey Nixers! I am quite impressed by your efforts. I think so many of us don't really think about our planet and what we do with it. Thanks for bringing awareness to us that one can take steps to preserve the environment. It is so amazing that once, streams and waterways were so clean, you could drink from them. You could eat snow. Not today! No wonder there are so many cases of disease/cancers, etc. There is no telling what is in our water and food that we buy!

climate change? um weren't we all supposed to be under water by 2000, not to mention double drowned by like 2006, then wiped out by the lizard people from the passing planet Nibiru or planet X or whatever it is in 2012? lol sorry couldn't resist. :) eat your heart out Al Gore, course now we got the more eccentric young A.O.C from new york. who informs us we shall all be dead again in 12 years lol after all, the scientists told her so. lol yea ok , we will listen to her. right lol she says all of this while sipping wine in her kitchen trying to acquire information on facebook live as to what the bloody noise making hole in her sink is. yes, it seems our esteemed colleague congressional rep from new york was suddenly spooked by her garbage disposal, and felt the need to reach out to the general public to ascertain what this thing was that devoured anything that fell into it. ROFL! sorry, makes that kind of thing hard to buy into, not to mention the whole , we gonna eliminate all cows, planes and automobiles of any kind. :)

Shave1......Hmmmm? You do understand that those were extreme predictions to kick people like you into action before its too late? In a non-statistical sense, the term "prediction" is often used to refer to an informed guess or opinion. To base your statement on predictions to make a case that because they didn't happen they will never happen is very simple minded.
I suppose your the kind of person that until it happens you can't believe it will. The destruction of our childrens future is something, as guardian's, we should ensure never even comes close to happening. Unfortunately its people like you who wont do anything about it until it happens which will be the cause of it happening. And then all you will say is....Oh well...Its too late to do anything about it now.

Hi Jan sis :) It is soo sad that the freedoms we had as children, we as adults are taking away from the next generations of children. And whats worse and makes me feel soo angry is us adults teaching the children in school that its their responsibility to make the changes to save their planet, while at the same time we adults continue to do that things that are destroying their planet. And we wonder why the children have no respect for adults anymore. X

nix , im not saying that there is absolutely nothing to climate change at all, or that there is no responsibility to do what is reasonably possible to take care of the planet God has entrusted to us. Im just saying that people are so wore out on the nut jobs that insist on doing away with all of the things we utilize on a daily basis to live a half way normal existence. not to mention that what they propose is in itself completely unsustainable. or bonkers at best. truthfully nix, the cause would be a lot more credible if folks would stop acting like bizarre wackos, and present some ideas that make sense and dont involve the complete dismantling of the human race. that is why no one pays attention to it. guys like Al Gore, Bernie Sanders, and AOC who have an obvious stake politically and financially have become your poster children for the cause, and it has no real credibility. :)

I think man made climate change is a ruse designed to get us to willingly accept more taxation and control in our lives. If climate change is happening, I would say it is more due to natural variation than anything we puny humans can do to the earth.

If man made climate change were real, the powers that be would actually do something to fix it. The fact that the elites do not give a damn, as evidence by their absurd levels of consumption, is a sign to me that it is all bogus. Al Gores household consumed 20 times the electricity of the average American household. He does not seem concerned so why should I? If it is real, let the elites fix it. I am not sacrificing my standard of living for this crap if they will not.

Carbon taxation is a regressive tax, which means the poor are burdened by it more than the rich. Taxing carbon is also idiotic. The only solution to clean energy is the free market. When something comes around that is cheaper and more efficient than fossil fuels, the market will force people to switch in order to maximize profit. Destroying our economies with carbon tax will hinder our ability to develop the next form of energy. Without fossil fuels we go back to the Stone Age. Lets get real people. Dont be sheep.

Unfortunately Jan I can see only one way to preserve what we still have....And that's the war that's wrote about in the Holy books. The coming war between the descendants of the sons of Abraham, Ishmael (Islam)and Isaac (Christianity and Judaism) will be the only thing to curb humanities desire to consume all it wants.

Shave1. You wrote 'and present some ideas that make sense and dont involve the complete dismantling of the human race'. Are you aware of the UN sustainability meeting between all heads of countries that was held about 15 years ago? The UN concluded that if we all want to live on this planet we all have to become peasant farmers. But if we want to continue in our standard of life that we live today....I think it was 2/3rds of the humanities population has to be eradicated. Do we see humanity reverting to becoming peasant farmers? So how does eradicating 2/3rds of humanity grab you Shave1 lol

John Galt. The problem with our masters are they are distracted with their 2000 year crusade for Jerusalem. Until they have got what Abraham said they should have (control over humanity and the Holy land) they will not turn their attention to fixing what they have destroyed getting where they are today....To the gates of Jerusalem. To the rest of your comment I hope I answered in my reply to Shave1.

Nix it is absolutely insane to think that the only two options is genocide or to become peasant farmers. This is why no one takes leftists seriously. There is a third option you know, one that has always allowed humanity to overcome challenges. It is called technology. The only way to advance technology is to keep pushing forward, not going backward. I thought leftists called themselves progressives these days, but they sure advocate a lot of regressive stuff. Humanity will reach out into the stars and colonize other worlds one day. That is the future I want to see, not some feudalist subsistence farming nightmare world you seem to want to live in. If you feel so strongly about it you should cut off your electricity and running water and lead by example. While you are doing that I am going to continue living and working in the real world.

John Galt. I was quoting the United Nations. You talk like humanity has not been warned for 200 years at minimum about our impact on the natural world. You talk like we have not just been warned again that humanity has 10 years to stop the consumption and destruction of the natural world. Humanity has had the technology to save the natural world for decades if not centuries. But what did those who rule humanity do? Shelve this technology because implementing it would hurt their profit margins.
What faith have you got that our masters will put the rest of us over their fulfilling of their own existence? All I see is them wanting 2/3rds of us to be gone and the rest of us peasant farmers so they can continue as normal.

As to what I do.....I use maybe 20p worth of gas and electric a day. I grow my own food. I have brought my income and expenditure down to £30 a day. I buy second hand. I do not drive a car. I am a gardener and tree surgeon. I turn my tap off when I have wetted my tooth brush. I only flush the toilet when its been used for a shite or it starts to smell. I do not use airplanes. I am trying to give up meat. I recycle or re-use all my waste I can. I still have lots more I can do.

Hi Shave1. It would be naïve if I didn't see it happening lol :(

I'm surprised no-one picked up on the elephants in the room....The 2000 year Abrahamic Zionist agenda to control the world through commerce, banking, media, politics and religion. Without that steering humanity, none of this destruction would be happening. For Humanity would still understand its place in reality.

Again I reiterate. The free market will overcome every challenge facing humanity, or we go extinct. Every generation has its share of luddites. We either advance technologically and move to the stars, or we die as a species. Going back in time is not an option, and thankfully people suggesting that are a fringe group that no one really cares about. You can keep restricting your life, just know that it is accomplishing nothing, and you are decreasing your own standard of living for zero benefit. The free market will provide. If we truly have the technology to live green, as you suggest, and it is actually being shelved by the powers that be, it is happening because of cronyism. You don't solve cronyism by giving the government more power, it actually makes cronyism worse. Laissez-faire capitalism is the only way.

I was so impressed by Nix's conservative measures:

"As to what I do.....I use maybe 20p worth of gas and electric a day. I still have lots more I can do."

You know, we Americans waste so much it isn't funny. I am even guilty of some things. So often I buy food, and it is never eaten. To think there are countries where people are starving. As I've gotten older, I have become more mindful of things. We could all do well like Nix.

Is this why the Brits call Americans, Fat Cats?

John Gault,

of course extremes on any side and for any argument are unappealing. And of course the "elites" don't give a crap and use all the resources and energy they want, they are used to lifestyles that is beyond that of the common man, that doesn't imply a conspiracy. I agree with Nix to a certain extent, that we need to change our way of life completely, that doesn't mean starving yourself and wearing rags in the dark, but doing some of the things he mentioned. reducing meat consumption (its heavily processed and full of antibiotics anyways so no use arguing its vital for our health), recycling, not buying fast fashion etc. it really bothers me that in America at least, virtually ALL conservatives deny climate change or under estimate its effects just because the left talks about it (not arguing they do something 100% of the time either). Why dont we all agree that 7.5 BILLION people using constantly using resources does in fact have an impact in the world. I dont think you really get that number... 7.5 billion is a helluva lot of anything. so we are not "puny" like you said after all. this isn't just for us, but for your kids and grandkids. we can move forward technologically AND change out lifestyles at the same time, not one or the other.

and of course, my message is meant with respect. I just want people to open up more and realize that we all need to change. I think Nix, even though he is one man, is making a difference not only by living the way he does, but by influencing others to change or at the ver least think. change happens one person at a time.

If people want to make changes to their lifestyles they are free to do that. I am against government coercion to force changes. Things like carbon tax, banning products, banning technology, etc... The government has enough control and power over our lives. They don't need more. I just fundamentally disagree with you as to what the solution is to the problem of climate change, if it is even man made. If fossil fuels truly are the problem, and the only solution is to completely eliminate their use, well then there are only 2 possible ways to achieve that. We either ban fossil fuels completely and go back to the Stone Age, or we allow the free market to work and thrive and develop the next form of energy that is not only clean, but more importantly competitive in the market place. We are not there yet. We will be there one day. I just don't believe that taxing things and banning things will get us to that goal. I believe it will make that goal more difficult to achieve, and that is why I am against it. I am a strong believer in the free market because it is the only thing that has ever managed to bring large numbers of people out of poverty. You know what doesn't help bring people out of poverty? Government control.

Ugh to government control! I am baffled at the people in America. Don't they realize that our democratic party's entire intention is to take control away from the people? Now you know why so much crap goes on against our President Donald Trump. He doesn't swallow this ideology, thus makes a lot of political figures mad. It is funny though...

I never realized how spot on Simcountry has been as compared to real life politics. I get it.....just from having played this game!

Sorry, this is a bit off-topic.

But, on topic... I think change in all aspects of life starts with the people. We have to make the changes. It is refreshing to know that someone as Nix, who stands behind his point, practices what he says. Kudos, Nix!

Dear Letsie,

You are correct to a certain degree. What I am referring to is not party control, but controlling people. There are even some republicans who are under the one-world order movement and big government. I don't support this ideology and think it will lead to disaster. People will lose their rights to everything. Why do you think there is so much opposition to gun control? Once the government takes your guns away, you have no way to protect yourself against them even...….another means to be reliant on the government to take care of you. Nah, I prefer to keep my gun and protect my family and my property as first line of defense...then the government police can assist! ;-D

Maybe it is the Tennessean hillbilly in me! :-D
