Perhaps one of the most interesting words in the English language today, is the word fuck. Of all the English words beginning with f, fuck is the single one referred to as the "f-word". It's the one magical word. Just by it's sound it can describe pain, pleasure, hate and love. Fuck, as most of the other words in English, has arrived from Germany. Fuck from German's "fliechen" which mean to strike. In English, fuck folds into many grammatical categories. As a transital verb for instance, "John fucked Shirley". As an intransitive verb; "Shirley fucks". It's meaning is not always sexual, it can be used as an adjective such as; John's doing all the fucking work. As part of an adverb; "Shirley talks too fucking much", as an adverb enhancing an adjective; Shirley is fucking beautiful. As a noun; "I don't give a fuck". As part of a word: "abso-fucking-lutely" or "in-fucking-credible". Or as almost every word in a sentence: "fuck the fucking fuckers!". As you must realize, there aren't many words with the versitility such as the word fuck,as in these examples used as the following words;
- fraud: "I got fucked"
- trouble: "I guess I'm really fucked now"
- dismay: "Oh, fuck it!"
- aggresion: "don't fuck with me, buddy!"
- difficulty: "I don't understand this fucking question"
- inquery: "who the fuck was that?"
- dissatisfaction: "I don't like what the fuck is going on here"
- incompetence: "he's a fuck-off!"
- dismissal: "why don't you go outside and fuck yourself?"

I'm sure you can think of many more examples.
With all these multipurpoused applications, how can anyone be offended when you use the word?
Use this unique, flexibel word more often in your daily speech. It will identify the quality of your character immediately. Say it loudly and proudly:
FUCK YOU!

Politically incorrect. I like it!

From a transplanted southern boy, "fuck y'all". :D

Also, don't forget the multi-uses of the word "shit". Which also goes very well w/ "Fuck", for instance:
I don't give a fucking shit!
Fuck this shit!
and
This shit is fucked up!
I'm not a wiz when it comes to the grammatical categories, but Shit definitly fits in a bunch just like Fuck. So
"I got to get back to this fucking piece of shit economy, and fix the shit out of my fucking shortages" Cheers and good post, it was an educational experience.

My grandkids will still get in big trouble for using the f-word. There are far more expressive and very applicable words for any situation, you just have to read a bit more and try to master the use of your language.

Open Sesame showed a good counter-point. Can't make infixes with any other word.

Yes, Crafty I don't let the children use those words, but, it is still interesting how these words have come to have so many uses. Non of which are correct, but correct in a sense. If you will.

See 'FCUK', the brand, not sure I like that openly displayed around, but maybe thats a liitle old fashioned of me. Do you think I should patent the brand name 'CNUT' if someone else hasn't already, it can't be long before that is acceptable.

'Tis a unique word, f*%k, though, as above usages have illustrated.

@Scarlet. 'bloody', the original infix.

'Up,' through idiom, transcends grammatical categories.

There is an urban legend which says that 'fuck' dates from medieval times. Supposedly, it was written on the doors of villagers placed under the medieval equivalent of house arrest for rape, and stands for Forced Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. I've no idea how true that is, but it makes a good story ...

On another note, language is constantly changing. Every generation needs its taboo words ... a way of expressing how extreme one's emotion is on any given subject ... and those words change, as the most extreme fall into common usage and another has to be re-invented to take its place.

When I was a child (and unfortunately this betrays my age, but no matter) the words 'bloody' and 'shit' were considered to be outrageous. One day, I have no doubt, 'fuck' will be uncontroversial, and something else will have emerged which is considered far worse.

It's fun keeping up with them, though.

An example of the way language changes: in a trial about the language employed by (I believe) the Bloodhound Gang on one of their albums, which was deemed to incite youth to violence, a judge said, in his summing up: "this music is ... well ... wicked!"

The band quoted him on their next album cover: "Judge XXX says our music is Well Wicked". :)

Hugs and respect

Jo

Ok, my translation package came up with:

YOU TAKE THIS SPONGE AND CRUSHERS YOU HIM UNTIL IT IS DRY

I suspect the software isn't appreciating the finer points of the German language ...

As a young hounddog soldier in Germany back in the dark ages, my favorite German idiom (well, after "zwei bier bitte" and "jagerschnitzel mit pommes frites bitte") was "Kommen sie hier mit der hosen im der hand bitte."

Which ties loosely into the point of the thread. (As he blushes)

And I apologize for any German misspellings. I was better at speaking it than writing!
