The title pretty much says it all. The only thing I find lacking in this game thus far is the chat system. Not much in the way of features or security. I guess I am old fashioned, I like to know who I'm speaking with when I speak to them.
IRC is a great tool to use when you want a secure platform for chat, planning and even diplomacy. Once you register your nickname you will also be able to register your own rooms, for purposes ranging from federation communication to business opportunities.
I have started a public room on the Rizon server named #scpublic. Once you identify with your in-game nickname, you'll be recognized in the room as an actual player in simCountry.
I use an IRC conduit called IceChat. There are several to choose from, and never, ever actually pay for this. There are plenty of free ones out there. A quick google search will help you choose one.

I have also added a triviabot and an internets bot. The internets bot has the ability to search over these sites: Google, Bash, Qdb, UrbanDictionary, and FML.

Ok, in order to address some of the registration complaints I have gotten, I'm going to throw a short tutorial here to make it easier for some folks to get identified on IRC.
When you enter IRC, you'll likely be nicknamed Guest with a 5 digit number after your name. If your name isn't guest in game, you won't be needing this suggestion. So, here is the process:
(Do this in the server screen area, not in a chat room. You have to set a password and if you do it wrong, your chosen password will appear in the chat room you're in.)
1. Change your nick. You can do this by entering /nick {your nick} without the brackets, ofc. Note: Anytime I use brackets here, please remember that they are not entered when you perform the action, just your name. If you have a two-part name, underscores can be used.
2. The system will notify you in the next line if you can retain that nickname or if it is owned by someone else. You will have to change it if it is previously owned.
3. So, your choice of nickname is available. Perfect! Now you must register your nickname. Registering allows you to be voiced in moderated rooms and also lets you construct rooms of your own. You will enter /msg nickserv register {password} {email} . Again, no brackets. Set your password as something easy to remember but difficult to guess. The email address is not optional, as you will have to confirm your actions by that email. Note: Your privacy is respected; this e-mail won't be given to any third-party person or entity.
4. Confirm the email. Your nickname is officially registered once you do. Congratulations. You are now registered on the IRC network.
Once you are registered, visit me at #scpublic . I will then add you to the access list and no matter the moderation you will always have voice in that room, as you are a confirmed player in SimCountry.
People have asked me if there are any rules in the room, etc. As far as I am concerned, this will be a no kick no ban room if you are a simcountry player. I will not ban anyone, period. I will, however, kick you if your behavior crosses the lines of common decency. Berating players, bullying of players won't be tolerated. Also, in the case these events occur, I will not be the decider, the room will be. If your behavior is boorish and effects the room as a whole and they have something to say about it, I have a feeling you'll be kicked. The only way a permanent ban will ever be enforced is if a player threatens another player in their outside-the-game life. That will not be tolerated at all. Plus, if I overlook that and they have a legitimate complaint, the room will get shut down and I will lose my ability to administer rooms. So this last part is non-negotiable.

You're all set, you should be able to open the client, connect to the server and identify your nick. Should even still be listed under the nick you chose. As soon as it connects you should be able to do /msg nickserv identify (password) and you should be set. As far as Andy goes, I can walk him through it like I did for you, just have him show up in the sc chat and we can go from there. |

Uh, apparently most of you did NOT heed my request!!!! Dun make me angry. It ain't purty!!! I am trying to be in the IRC room at 3 PM CST each day, M-F, in hopes that more of you will come and talk to each other. We talk about everything.
That is what this game is lacking these days!! The best part of this game has always been the community. I'd like to see that again. So please contribute. I know you have busy schedules, but I promise you, the experience is rewarding. |
