I was wondering, for further down the road, what is the most effective way to defend against a player controlled military?

Build lots of fortifications, build a corp that produces fortifications and contract production directly to your country. Then try to get a few hundred total forts. 300-600 or more depending on the size and value of your country and the risk you have of being attacked. This will discourage most players from attacking you as the amount of (clicking) required to defeat your country won't be worth it for most players.

You can also leave your country in Secured Mode. From what I see the risks are minimal as wars between players are few and far between -even on the War World.
