I am wondering... How much defence do people normally keep in their secondary countries in order to ward off predators? Say a country with some 20M population, a healthy industrial base, and solid indexes... How much defense would such a country typically need to be relatively safe from random attacks?

That's a hard question to answer. You want a well-rounded defense that doesn't break the bank. I recommend finding a good federation on KB and asking the right questions. Look for The Protectorate...

Debatable. I think you are best off with the secrecy parameters up and the map blank. If your military assets are more valuable than the other assets it would be very risky to try anything.

I have attacked countries because I wanted to take the weapons. Weapons are better than cash because you can transfer more than $3T in assets per month. Obviously forts, bases, and debt are deterrents. It would also help if your CEO owns some of that industrial base. That prevents the predator from destroy corps in the war but he/she will still lose them afterward.

In any case it is a complex question. If you are active enough you can also count your offense as part of the defense. An inactive country with lots of offense is an ideal target.

With all the secrecy parameters up the enemy can still see how many solders you have and the total value of the military assets.

Pathetic Sheep, what if you turn off the scrolling news bar? How will anyone know your # of soldiers or army assets then.

The army assets can still be figured by clicking on the country's link to its nominal value...

Ya, I always check the nominal value. It is not accurate but it gives a ball park figure of total military assets.

The employment index gives you the number of soldiers and officers in the army.

The war rank, finance, total score, rank, and level could also tell a lot. I haven't tried using any of them. I usually flip through regions of the map and open about a dozen countries in new tabs. I keep one or two tabs open and go to the next region. Someone might search through the presidents list and look for countries with low (better) finance rank and high (worse) war rank.

On White Giant I found a country with one garrison blueprint that had 1 AAbat, 1 Defbat, and 1 jeep and no nuclear defense in the garrisons. The garrisons were in 20 forts and the cities. The population was 33 million, it had no state factories and no military units. It did have around 5T in military assets which were all missiles an

I'm trying to get my Defense Index up to 100. I've got a population of 8,300,000 and an army of 823,736, but my Index is only 55.88.

It seem insane that 10% of my population needs to be in the military. But, I suppose this means that I need to start investing in more of the high-impact items, like military bases. I'm not looking for easy answers here...just trying to make sense of it all.

roberto, you probably ought to increase your population by a lot first, and try to get more private corporations for income. but there is a list in the documentation showing which weapons add how many points to the defense index, so you know which are more efficient to purchase and in what amounts.

Thanks, Alexander...looks like I'm being too impatient with the pace of increasing my rating. :)

If your talking about the "war situation index", military bases help a lot. You don't need to worry much about the war index if your country isn't worth taking. CCCs are easier to take than player controlled countries.

The defense index is something else. If you have a secure country and are trying for level awards get missile interceptor batteries. You only need enough missiles to prevent automatic purchases of more missiles.
