that depends on what your are airlifting, and how many air transport units, how far, and how many hops you must make.
usually, i'll airlift 3-5 LRD, with 20 Air transport units, (1000 military transport planes,) and it takes less than an hour.
how ever, not terribly long ago, i airlifted 8 fully equipped air wings with bombers, and fighters, ammo... i was transporting them over the 10k range, meaning i had to airlift them twice, a *double hop,* i was using 190+ air transport units, some where in the neighborhood of 9500+ military transport plain. and i ended up waiting 8 hours for both hops to finish. needless to say, i found that rather useless.
for raiding C3s, the 3-5 LRD are more than you'll need. for fighting players, well, its a good thing that we get 48 hours before war starts... because transporting the units you may need, will take some time. tip, try to keep the ammo, to what y
