Question on Federations (Kebir Blue)

Since this is a pretty peaceful world I was wondering how useful it is to be in a federation. Do federations go to war just for competitions sake or are they really needed to protect your countries?

We use federations to develop relationships, help each other, pass information, the usual procedures. We just don't mobilize to war.

KB I think most will agree is more of a "learning" world where we let everyone to they're own methods. Our federation, "brotherly love", has grown lately, but until there was interest in it, I really had no contact with other players.

Now we all help each other out between advice and with disaster aid when we need it. We've never had to use it to protect ourselves against a war.
