Hardly anyone is ever online or at least doesn't respond. I've also noticed that the chat room has been completely abandoned... Why?

Dillon,

I have seen you in chat and have spoken, but with no response. When you enter chat, make sure you go to the Simcountry Cafe and not the other rooms for the individual worlds. That is where most of us go.

I see. Thanks. The game mods need to make the community more tightly knit. The game is almost too solitary... Diplomacy is pretty fun on simcountry but only the most active and powerful players ever participate in it because of the effort it takes.
