The Brits have made as many mistakes as anyone in their international and domestic endevours, but have remained on the cutting edge of societal evolution and progress. They have been a force for civilization and our Western freedoms for centuries.

All in all, a wonderful people.

No nation fought sooner, harder or gave such an overly large proportion of their national weath in the name of Western Freedom. Few in the free world have bankrupted themselves to end tyrannical oppression.

And now that nonsense is over... Britain's the best. Modern ideas of freedom, political and economic, have their roots well and truly entrenched in the British way of life and English common law.

If America is the "last bastion of freedom" in the modern world, then Britain is without a doubt it's mother and father.

I'm British and i live in Northern Ireland. The English made a right mess in Ireland. Its made it very hard to defend them when talking to Irish people.

I may be British and we have engineered some marvellous inevtions but we failed to carry them through.

Northern Ireland: Neither Ireland nor the British want NI unless it has mineral wealth so independence is now the only way forwards but we should never have been there int he 1st place.

Top enegineering designs and patents given to Americans for support in WW2. It would never surprise me if the British bombed Pearl Harbour to get the Americans to put their money where their mouth is.

Britain was the 1st place they thought my fall to communism (rational communism) yet we have failed to empower the people and local authorities. I can only be thankful we have a left-of-centre party edging us in the right direction slowly.

Britain may have Great in its name but so long as wealth and power lie in the hands of the few, and they play on the greed of the underclasses, it will not live up to its name.

British, nice chaps. But until they get over the hang ups of losing an Empire and get ride of Victorian ideals then they will hurt themselves.

The English in particular, St G's day has only come back in the last what 10 years? Good on them and they should be proud.

You have proved yourself wrong Adam. Your poor punctuation is evidence of a lack of education. Do not insult Essex people based on the stereo type that you see on 'The only way is Essex', watched by dumbed down ignoramuses like yourself.

I think anybody who is from the south the England (even Essex) is 'generally' more intelligent than those from the north as I could tell that from personal experience, and I was born and brought up outside of Bradford of all places.

Scottish and I would use the term English and Brittish interchangeably, in my opinion the English aren't any better or worse than any other western nation. In fact the hardcore free-marketering of the South east is probably their biggest flaw.

One of the most historically tolerant and relaxed cultures of Europe, with great innovation, order and naval dominance, always bravely siding with small European countries that were bullied by Great Empires. Small countries in Europe, Portugal for example, exists thanks to them. They were great keepers of the balance of power in Europe for many centuries. Very civil populace in history and today, the picture of industry... Great people indeed. Now to look at some Mainland European-Observed Flaws:

Terrible north-western cooks that tend to Narrow-Mindness and a feeling of ever-supremacy ever since Elizabeth I, when a storm saved them from destruction and inquisition................. Today they face Sterling devaluation, faster-than-wage inflation, horrible fiscal policies and their insistance on asking for more funds from Germany and the USA... But not to join the Euro Zone or Schenegen Area (Which are wise decisions) :) But I like them. I like to visit, Scotland specifically... My Honest Views
