1. I closed hospitals these days in an attempt to cap my health index from 140 something to 134 or slightly above 130. This was to follow Aries' suggestion in his previous threads and our discussion in 'Suggestions' forum. Now the average age drops from 35.1 to 34.99, and I expect it to fall more. This could explain the net death in my country - a net decrease of 30000 in population each year. As a result, this has cut my retirement pension cost (I believe) though this is a defunct game feature. I expect the elderly to die more and things would become normal.

2. I purchased population before cutting health index. I hope this would not harm my country too much. A sudden 2 to 3 million rise within a few years might be the reason why >80 age group is suddenly larger than those from 60 to 80 years old.

3. I don't understand why the total number of newborns as calculated by the birth rate x age group population do

The most telling stat is average age. Depending on its level, it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain natural population growth. In short, the lower it is, the more growth you have.

Your average age is currently 34.96. An average age of about 34.5 is the break even point of 120-130 health index. Less than 34.5 and you get growth, more and you see a population decline. The downside of more health index is that the average age will continue to go up and up and always leads to population decline, eventually.

The higher average age also leads to a larger older population, which results in a smaller workforce relative to your population. Note that if you try to keep adding hospitals for higher and higher health index, you have the larger problem of a smaller workforce and then employing a larger proportion of those workers in your health system.
