from the "tool tip" in automation:

Country Automation Features have no effect on countries in Game Level 4.
As of Game Level 4, a president should have the skills to run a country.
Beginners and general economic protection remains effective.

I do not like the automation. However, there are some reasons why a player could choose to continue using the automation, such as a disinclination to involve himself in certain steps of the process.

While I have advocated, and will continue to advocate letting players choose not to use the automation, they should also be able to choose to use it, regardless of their game level. This saves time and effort on the player's part for managaing their empire. Game level 16 (full game) requires 12 countries. Having some automation, such as ordering of country consumption products would help in the management process - at the player's option.

Even without automation, your country will order what it needs. That is set in the trade page.

Just noticed that myself. Took a while, since I'm overstocked in most categories, guessing that falls under general economic protection to prevent huge shortages.

I will look at exactly what the automation does and would like indeed to extend beyond level 4.

There are in fact two types of automation:

1. Automation that tries to save a country from disaster. It is triggered on if certain very destructive conditions occur and it will try to avert them.
This is automatic, and cannot be turned off.

2. There are automation function to tune education, employment, health etc. that can be turned on/off.

These currently disappear after level 4 and could be extended.

I just need to see exactly what it does. At low levels the function sometimes give you advantages for free. This is not needed at higher levels.
