Has the war engine changed? (Kebir Blue)

Attacking 400 helicopter with 1000 fighters took 2 attacks? First attack took out just over 200 helis, 2nd attack finished the wing of.
Surely 1000 fighters should have taken the wing out in one go?! No supporting air defense, plenty of air to air missiles....no obvious reason.
Plus my land units have again stopped moving!! No reason given in log.

if the country is an adjacent country your fighters will sustain much more damage if you don't have one of your land units positioned near the defense wings you're attacking. Oddly, it makes a huge difference.
