The 30 minutes of silence is the kind of minimalist eccentricity which seems to be right up Glass' alley.
If I'm not mistaken, that piece was "composed" for a concert hall where one can hear rain (water?) drops. So, the 30 minutes of silence were actually to enjoy the sounds of nature... and not the rumblings of a mob.
Nevertheless, I would join the angry mob if I paid a bundle to hear something I can and do hear everyday from my window.
Everytime someone mentions Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings, I remember of Joaquim Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez. They are both very sad pieces.
I'm a bad person to talk to about classical, because it is the only thing I listen to.
