Whys is there a limit to the number of Corporations you own shares in?

I just received this message:
"You already have shares in 502 public corporations."

Why?

Added to that, there is a limit to the number you can actually build - I think I hit that limit at 200 corporations, maybe it was 300.

I had hoped that I could build some corporations that were in short supply, but with this limiter I can't really help the economy on LU.

Dunno about your issue, I have not hit that problem and I have 291 Private corporations and 205 Public corporations.

I'm guessing this limit is supposed to encourage players to spend more $$$ to operate multiple enterprises. I can't think of any other reason . . . I'm super annoyed by this.

Ebenezer Screw is right that there is also a limit to the number of private corps you can build - but I'm not sure of the number (the message says "Sorry, you already own too many corporations."

The reason is that although a player should be able to expand, it should not be very easy to dominate a world.

we had that before with dire consequences.

It is however possible for one player to have even 2.000 corporations in two enterprises.
