It was actually used as a tittle for the most pious followers/Priests/Bishops/Parish of the Catholic Church and they never used it to say that they were the replacement or embodiment of God or christ, they used it to say that they were so Pious that god or Jesus is with them and leading them through life.

Sorry to mislead you like that Antinio but it's actually King Alfred the Great of England who united all his country together for the first time in history who also defended his country against the invading Vikings at that time. It does'nt, it only corrupts them, but it was the only way to get our own church established, which was famously known as the "reformation". There was a lot of "knock on effects" after the reformation as you could say he is to blame for a lot of religious wars long after he died. For example, the English Civil War in the 1600s or the Persecution of the protestant Hugonots in France in the 1700s. But you should'nt worry about the anglican church being so different to the catholics, because in terms of their ways there is'nt really, i've heard our church is the closest to the catholic church and it is as I know that for a fact.

For the other protestant religions in England such as Methodists, reformists and baptists, they follow the more extreme ways in how they practice their religions.
