We were recently confronted with the use of power at the server farm where our servers are located.
We have made some effort to consolidate our site and try to reduce the use of electricity.
we have now reduced the number of servers that are running 24/7 by one.
It was done by moving virtual machines around and running more on fewer servers.
the site has a lot of capacity and performance is not reduced in any way.
we also eliminated the last moving disk drives used for backup only, moving to 10% SSD drives, reducing power use and reducing the need for cooling.
lots of work and we ended (functionally) at the same place with much reduced use of electric power.
